GBFG November 2017 Newsletter

Newsletter of the Greater Birmingham Fiber Guild

                      President’s Corner

Nothing is a cozy as the feel of wool on a cold day!  I’m thankful for when the weather changes and I can pull on handmade socks that fit like dear old friends.  In fact, during this season of thankfulness and giving, I’m just loaded with things to be grateful for!!  High on my list are all the wonderful fiber friends that gather together for the warmth of our monthly meetings.  However, we also want to be mindful of those who struggle to feel warm, full, and comforted.  So this month we are sharing all the ways we use our talents to give to others.  Come and join us and you’ll be thankful too for the beautiful generosity I see in our members.  Perhaps you’ll learn of a new way to share your gifts as well!!

November Program
November 11, 2017
Hoover Church of Christ
10 am - 2 pm

It’s the season for giving, and we are inviting anyone who has a fiber related charitable project to come present it to our Guild.  If you or someone you know has a pet project, please contact Jennifer Justiss, jljustiss@aol.com.  If you have related patterns to share, I will make copies to distribute.

December Holiday Party
December 9, 2017
Hoover Church of Christ
11 a.m.

Our annual Holiday party will be held at our usual meeting place.  This year it will be a potluck so bring something to share with everyone,  The gift exchange will be a "bag" with maximum value of $15.  Place your bag in a brown grocery bag.  There will be no "Dirty Santa" activity.

Study Group Changes for November and December
The Guild has found that combining meetings has worked well for the busy holiday months.  Knitting Study usually meets the third Wednesday, Spinning the fourth Wednesday.  We will combine both groups to the 3rd Wednesday for the months of November and December.
So we will meet November 15 and December 20 10-2 in the Holy Family Room at St. Peter's in Hoover (park behind the church, come in the large back entrance, walk toward the loud voices.)  Everyone is welcome.  Bring a lunch or plan to take a break and go out for lunch.

Guild member makes top 5 in Texas quilt show

GBFG member Margit Krato entered her quilt in a recent quilt show/competition in Texas. Her entry was one of the top 5, and was selected for purchase by the sponsors.  It is now being displayed as part of their permanent collection.  All entrants were mailed specific colors of fabric, and had to use those colors and only those colors.  Margit's entry "Transitions"  uses the grey to separate two unique bands of bright colors.  A photo of the quilt is shown here:

Congrats to Margit!!!

GBFG October 2017 NEWSLETTER

Newsletter of the Greater Birmingham Fiber Guild

                      President’s Corner

The summer is flying by, just like the riders of the Tour de France AND the spinners of the fiber world in the Tour de Fleece.  Each summer, the on-line community Ravelry hosts the “Tour de Fleece” in solidarity with the annual race in France.  People from all over the world organize themselves into teams to set goals and spin along .  Our Guild has proudly participated in the race for the past three years, with each year growing wildly in participation and enthusiasm.  Last year, we put up 707 posts, but this year it was well over 1000!!   Even if you aren’t a spinner, the on-line event is fun to follow, thanks to the many beautiful photos posted by all, the lovely camaraderie (code for our silly late night discussions and good natured teasing) and the amazing learning and encouragement.  As president of this group, I am often over-whelmed by the support shown for each other and the Tour is such a tangible example of that.  Perhaps next year you will participate too!!
Thanks to our riders and cheerleaders from 2017!

Ravelry Weave-Along
Weavers!  Fall is here (says the calendar) and it's time for our Fall Weave-Along on Ravelry.  The plan is to weave anything in overshot.  There are rumors of baby blankets and table runners.  If you're not on Ravelry, I can't thing of any good reason why you couldn't join us and show off your work at one of the meetings.

October Program
October 14, 2017
Hoover Church of Christ
10 am - 2 pm

Our awesome Weaving Study Group is going to share with us their Fall weave-along subject, which is an overshot weaving project.  Most of us have seen Jen Lackey’s award-winning coverlet, and I am very excited to hear about the history and mechanics of weaving these wonderful patterns.

Calling All Philanthropists
As a guild we have participated in several fiber related charitable projects over the years, the last official one, as I remember, being knitted hats for preemies.  We have had several others presented in recent years that I think members would like to consider making but might have forgotten about or don’t have a pattern.
If anyone has a project they would like to share at the November meeting, contact me, jljustiss@icloud.com.  Bring a sample of your project to show, and I will arrange to make copies of your patterns to give out at the meeting.
Let’s enter the holiday season with a spirit of giving!
