February Program:  Falling in Love with Antique Spinning Wheels

Presenter:  Jennifer Lackey

 

At the guild’s February meeting on Saturday, February 14, guild member Jennifer Lackey will share her love of 19^thcentury spinning wheels.  Jen will bring several wheels in order to discuss their history and to demonstrate with them, including a "great" or "walking" wheel dating from before the U.S. Civil War.  She will also talk a bit about what to look for when buying an antique wheel and some advice on rehab (for the wheels, any antique wheel addiction you may acquire in the course of the demonstration will only be actively encouraged).  Jennifer will be glad to answer questions about acquiring and re-furbishing antique wheels.

Please join us for this fascinating program. Park in front of the church and enter the building through the far left doorway, under the awning. The guild meeting room is the first door on the right as you start down the hallway.

President’s Column                                                     Hello Fiber Friends! I hope your 2015 is off to a good start and filled with lots of wonderful projects, both on the needles and in the brain!  I have been identifying and finishing UFO'S and in the course of this have ripped a few things that no longer appealed to me. (That is a lesson that took a long time for me to learn.) Be kind to yourself and give yourself permission to rip a project back to its beginnings and let the yarn become something that makes you happy! The Knitting Study Group is exploring Elizabeth Zimmerman's Pi Shawl.  One of my UFO's has become this shawl and I am so much happier with it! I have started her plain shawl to showcase my hand painted lace weight yarn I dyed last year. SO when we get all the details worked out we want the members at large to join us in knitting a Pi Shawl....then we can have a party....Wear Your Pi Shawl and Eat It Too!.....and serve various pies.....maybe even at the Holiday Party! Sounds like fun to me!! Details will be announced later on, but you can be thinking and exploring! I am excited about February's meeting and learning about antique spinning wheels! They are so beautiful...if they just work! Jennifer will definitely enlighten us! Hope to see you all at the meeting! Type your email address in the window and click "Submit."     If you want to have something posted on the blog, send it to web@greaterbirminghamfiberguild.com                     Lace-a-palooza   In January, we shared hints and new techniques for knitting lace at our  lace-a-palooza.  This event was very helpful and enjoyable.  Some members were able to help us realize that lace knitting does not have to be difficult but attainable by all.  Here are some pictures of the different examples of lace that were there.                                                                             Study Groups Meet Monthly Spinning Study Group:  4th Wednesday of the month from 10 am to 2 pm at St. Peter’s Church in Hoover.  Please check out the GBFG Blog  for cancellations or schedule changes. Nancy Clemmons is interested in sharing her love of tatting with others by teaching one or more in her home. Please contact her if you are interested. Email me at dkattus@charter.net and put GBFG Newsletter in the subject line.   Greater Birmingham Fiber Guild   The Greater Birmingham Fiber Guild is comprised of individuals dedicated to the dissemination and preservation of fiber arts.  Meetings are the second Saturday of the month, 10:00-12:00 (no meeting in July). Drum Carder Laura Fry's Magic in the Water  book and DVD. There will be a $30 deposit per DVD (Lucy Neatby) and $100 deposit for the drum carder. Deposit for Laura Fry's materials still to be determined. The rental fee for all items is $5 per month rented. Equipment can only be checked out at Fiber Guild monthly meetings and a check-out list will be posted inside the door of the cabinet. Deposit checks will be held by Nancy Lavender, treasurer, until returned in original condition.
