GBFG October 2017 NEWSLETTER

Newsletter of the Greater Birmingham Fiber Guild

                      President’s Corner

The summer is flying by, just like the riders of the Tour de France AND the spinners of the fiber world in the Tour de Fleece.  Each summer, the on-line community Ravelry hosts the “Tour de Fleece” in solidarity with the annual race in France.  People from all over the world organize themselves into teams to set goals and spin along .  Our Guild has proudly participated in the race for the past three years, with each year growing wildly in participation and enthusiasm.  Last year, we put up 707 posts, but this year it was well over 1000!!   Even if you aren’t a spinner, the on-line event is fun to follow, thanks to the many beautiful photos posted by all, the lovely camaraderie (code for our silly late night discussions and good natured teasing) and the amazing learning and encouragement.  As president of this group, I am often over-whelmed by the support shown for each other and the Tour is such a tangible example of that.  Perhaps next year you will participate too!!
Thanks to our riders and cheerleaders from 2017!

Ravelry Weave-Along
Weavers!  Fall is here (says the calendar) and it's time for our Fall Weave-Along on Ravelry.  The plan is to weave anything in overshot.  There are rumors of baby blankets and table runners.  If you're not on Ravelry, I can't thing of any good reason why you couldn't join us and show off your work at one of the meetings.

October Program
October 14, 2017
Hoover Church of Christ
10 am - 2 pm

Our awesome Weaving Study Group is going to share with us their Fall weave-along subject, which is an overshot weaving project.  Most of us have seen Jen Lackey’s award-winning coverlet, and I am very excited to hear about the history and mechanics of weaving these wonderful patterns.

Calling All Philanthropists
As a guild we have participated in several fiber related charitable projects over the years, the last official one, as I remember, being knitted hats for preemies.  We have had several others presented in recent years that I think members would like to consider making but might have forgotten about or don’t have a pattern.
If anyone has a project they would like to share at the November meeting, contact me, jljustiss@icloud.com.  Bring a sample of your project to show, and I will arrange to make copies of your patterns to give out at the meeting.
Let’s enter the holiday season with a spirit of giving!
