November guild meeting and other guild activities

Date: Saturday, November 8, 2025

Time: 10:00 a.m.
Location: Hoover Church of Christ, 3248 Lorna Road, Hoover, AL 35216
Our program this month is: Yarn Rosettes

Just in time for the holidays, our wonderfully creative Guild member, Denise Stanton is walking us through making yarn rosettes. Perfect little flourish for those Christmas gifts, holiday sweaters and children’s accessories.

Please bring DK and/or Worsted weight yarn scraps, including art yarn. The funkier the better!

The guild will provide the cardboard looms and bent-tipped tapestry needles.

By the end of the morning you will go home with beautifully creative way to use up those odds and ends of your favorite yarns.

Other News:

Please join us November 14-15 at the Alabama Fiber Festival at Cahaba Brewing Company, 4500 5th Ave South, Building C, Birmingham, AL 35222; 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

The Greater Birmingham Fiber Guild will have a table at the festival and we are still in need of volunteers to answer questions, encourage new membership and sit and craft while “manning” the booth.

Please reach out to Shira Robinowich-Miller if you are able to give some time. We will happily take you for an hour or the whole day!!

November Ravelry Rumpus: Wolfenoot!

All right, dog lovers, this one’s for you! Tired of cute cats hogging all the yarn? Well, November 23 is Wolfenoot, a holiday created by a 7-year-old boy in New Zealand to celebrate canines, kindness, and kindness to canines. It’s also described as celebrating both our human and canine packs and making the world a better and kinder place to play with fiber.

All month long (not just November 23), post your pictures and projects in our Ravelry thread of dogs with yarn, dogs wearing yarny things, yarny things that look like dogs, you get the idea. Ravelry link: https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/greater-birmingham-fiber-guild/topics/4381949

December Meeting: Yarn Ball

The theme for this year’s gift exchange will be project bags and notion boxes. Please keep in the $10-$15 range. We will not be doing Dirty Santa this year, but will have a friendly exchange at the end of the meeting.

Board Elections and Positions

We still have a few positions available and are always looking for members who wish to share their expertise and time. Please reach out to Denise Stanton via text if you are interested in being on the Nominating Committee or volunteering for an open Board position.

Membership Dues and Renewal

The Guild’s membership year runs January through December. Annual dues are $25 per individual, and $30 per family. Remittance of payment gets meeting announcements and Zoom room information. You may pay by cash/check at any meeting or mail your check to Jennifer Lackey . Dues also can be paid using PayPal. Please mark it “friends/family” and NOT “goods/services”. October Guild Meeting, Saturday, October 11, 2025

Time: 10:00 am

Location: Hoover Church of Christ, 3248 Lorna Road, Hoover, AL 35216

Our Program this month is: Natural Dying with Beth Booth

Guild member and Expert Dyer Beth Booth will be introducing us to the wonderful world of natural dying. By using the world around us we can create beautiful naturally dyed yarns and fibers.

She will walk us through her process as well as share some of her hard-found secrets to successful dying.

Through discussion and samples, Beth will open our eyes to the wondrous world of nature; you will never look at those pesky “weeds” the same way again!

Join us after her discussion for Q&A and then stay for Show and Tell. Bring your latest awe-inspiring piece to show off and tell us all about how it came to be!.

Also, if you provided pieces for the Homewood Library show in September, they will be available for pick up. Stay and let the Guild see what lovelies you provided for the community to see!

From Jennifer Lackey...

We installed the Show at the Homewood Library yesterday and, thanks to all the people who submitted their work and the amazing volunteers who came to help with the displays, the Show looks AMAZING!! If you have any time this month, definitely stop by the Library to check it out.

OR consider blocking off some time on Saturday, the 20th to come to our Spin in Public Day at the Library! We'll be there from 10am to ??? Bring your wheel, spindle, charka, etc. (and maybe a chair?) OR just your knitting/stitching/whatever:) It's fun to be surrounded by the Guild's work while showing how it's actually made.

AND if you've ever wanted to learn to spin but can't make the monthly Spin Study group, this is a great opportunity. I'll have my Ashford Traddy there and it's a great wheel to start with. I'd love to show you (and the Public!) how to spin!!

August Guild Meeting, Saturday, 8-9-2025

Topic: Hands-on Beginner-friendly Crochet Bunting

Date: Saturday, August 9, 2025. 10:00am

Location: Hoover Church of Christ

Crochet Bunting is a delightful way to add charm and a pop of color to any space! Whether it is decorating for a party, your local guild’s meeting space or just adding some jazz to your home, this versatile and beginner-friendly project is perfect for all occasions.

With endless colors and shapes, crocheted bunting is as fun to make as it is to display.

August 15 is National Granny Square Day and to celebrate we are gathering with our hooks in hand to create a unique and colorful bunting that will be displayed at September’s Fiber Frenzy.

Hosted online by Simply Crochet magazine, if you’d like to participate in the nationwide event, please take a picture of your finished product at the meeting and post to Instagram with hashtags #GrannySquareDay2025 and #GrannySquareMake2025

Please Bring:

  • Scrap yarn of your liking
  • Crochet hooks and/or knitting needles (you can find size preferences on the ball band of your yarn)
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors

The guild will provide patterns for the bunting both in crochet and knit. The wonderful members of our Tatting and Crochet group will be available to assist and lead small groups.

In Other News

The Homewood Public Library has again asked for the GBFG to display our wonderful talents in September in the Ellenburg Art Gallery.

Please bring your items to display to August’s meeting. They will be set up/displayed at the library for all of September and will be returned at the November meeting. Please include your name, phone number, email address and a brief description of your item(s).

We would love to display items that have been made throughout the year at meetings; felted bowls, quilted mug rugs, etc.

If you would like to volunteer to assist there is plenty to do! We need Museum placards compiled and made, displays arranged and pieces cataloged. Please reach out to the Board at 2025gbfgboard@googlegroups.com
